How to destress

We want to share with you 3 super tips that weโ€™re currently implementing within our tribe to help boost our energy, focus and clarity on whatโ€™s important to live a fulfilled life during times of uncertainty. During these crazy times, itโ€™s easy to let stress take over and for you to feel like youโ€™re losing your way. With homeschooling, zoom meetings, a lack of holidays, and an unfulfilling social life itโ€™s completely normal to feel frustrated, stressed, and a little bit under/overwhelmedโ€ฆ

Itโ€™s a bit of a rollercoaster, weโ€™ve felt those negative emotions at times and many of our clients have too, so before we delve in, we just wanted you to know youโ€™re not alone in feeling this way. There are many different coping mechanisms that youโ€™re maybe using currently in order to stay sane, maybe youโ€™ve…

Started to eat โ€œsh**tyโ€ foods more often

Began reaching for alcohol during the week

Put yourself and your health on the back seat

Felt the need to work more than you ever have done

Whilst it feels the easiest and most comfortable thing to do in the short term, this is counterproductive to your life and at some point, it will eventually take its toll leaving you feeling much worse off in the long term. If you want to keep your head above water, take back control, and get back to winning ways here are 3 tips that are going to help you get ahead during this (temporary) chaotic period…

The first step

Understanding that you can only control so much, focusing in on the things you canโ€™t control or even influence is an easy way to send your stress level skyrocketing, in turn wasting the energy and productivity that you do have.

You canโ€™t control coronavirus, what the government is doing or the restrictions being placed on you.

But, you CAN control your response and your actions. How you feel, how you think, how you act, the food that goes into your mouth, your activity levels and how much alcohol you drink. Although you may feel it essential to know whatโ€™s going on in the world, limiting your exposure to negativity is absolutely essential if you want to protect your energy. For example, how many times you switch on the news, how many hours you spend scrolling through social media, and how much time you allow yourself to spend engaged in negative conversations.

We have a bit of a running joke inside The Health Guys HQ that people are never too busy to go out for a walk if their mobile phone screen time is up above 3 hours per day.

Going for a walk to de-stress, gather your thoughts, and get your steps in is a much more productive way to spend 45 minutes (both mentally and physically) vs sitting on the sofa filling your mind with negativity.

So that summarises tip number 1. If you want to boost your energy, maximise positivity, and get back to winning ways you must focus more on the things that you can control and let go of everything else.

Our second tip

Is to bring in a daily meditation sessionโ€ฆ

Before we jump into that we just really quickly want to debunk a couple of common myths. To be honest, these are beliefs we also had before making meditation a non-negotiable daily routine.

  • Meditation does not mean you must sit cross-legged, humming and chanting.

Itโ€™s simply a tool we use within our coaching program which helps us all stay focused, calm, and clear about what we need to do to move forwards. Taking a few minutes each day to relax, breath, and focus on just yourself is essential. We spend so much time every day in high-pressure environments, absorbed in work or other stresses, and it becomes very easy to forget about ourselves.

  • Meditation is a way to gain clarity and set clear intentions without all of the distractions and outside noise. Whether itโ€™s for two or twenty-two minutes.

Before making it a part of our lives we felt it would be a little bit airy-fairy, but the mental-health benefits we and our clients have experienced are just too good to not give it a mention here. If youโ€™re interested in the other health benefits gained by meditation, we recommend using headspace which is free for 10 days.

Tip number 3

is going to be short and sweet. We mentioned it in point number oneโ€ฆMoving more.

Being continuously sat at your desk and getting no fresh air or movement will very quickly build up stress and irritability. Not only that, youโ€™ll begin to feel more aches and pains. Setting yourself a steps goal for fresh air and an alarm every 60 minutes or so to move your body will help keep you energised, focused, and productive.ย

As mentioned it in tip one, getting out for a daily walk will also help you de-stress and gain clarity. There are a ton of other physical health benefits aligned with a daily walk, youโ€™ll see from the image below.

We know itโ€™s tough at the moment but even just implementing these one at a time is going to drastically improve your stress levels and has the potential to positively impact your mental health!
