Our passionate team of nutritionists and fitness professionals have developed our FREE tool which you can use to make positive choices and gauge your daily calorific intake, along with specifics for the core macronutrients – protein, fat and carbohydrates.

‘Nutrition is the study of nutrients in food, how the body uses them, and the relationship between diet, health, and disease.

Nutritionists use ideas from molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics to understand how nutrients affect the human body.

Nutrition also focuses on how people can use dietary choices to reduce the risk of disease, what happens if a person has too much or too little of a nutrient, and how allergies work.’

‘Macronutrients, or macros, are essential nutrients the body needs in large quantities to remain healthy. Macronutrients provide the body with energy, help prevent disease, and allow the body to function correctly.’

Macronutrients

  • Calories are units of energy.

In nutrition, calories refer to the energy people get from the food and drink they consume, and the energy they use in physical activity.

  • Protein is an important part of every diet. The amount of protein individuals need is dependent on their age and sex.

Protein is a part of every cell in the body. It helps the body to build and repair cells and tissues. Protein is a major component of the skin, muscle, bone, organs, hair, and nails.

  • Fats are important macronutrients. There are several types of dietary fat, and some are much more healthy than others.

Fat is essential for several bodily functions. It is an energy source, and it protects the skeleton and nerves. Fat also makes it possible for other nutrients to do their jobs.

  • Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the body. They are the sugars, starches, and dietary fibre that occur in plant foods and dairy products.

Carbohydrates are mainly found in plant foods. They also occur in dairy products in the form of a milk sugar called lactose. Foods high in carbohydrates include bread, pasta, beans, potatoes, rice, and cereals.

Carbohydrates play several roles in living organisms, including providing energy.

Byproducts of carbohydrates are involved in the immune system, the development of disease, blood clotting, and reproduction.
